Botanical Gardens of Waipapa is the name of the area where the gardens are located. In other words, I am talking about the Christchurch Botanic Garden.
Christchurch is a city with numerous captivating attractions, but the Botanical Garden of Waipapa is an exceptional must-visit destination for nature lovers. While many people associate botanic gardens with flowers, this one has much more to offer than just that; this one is a comprehensive oasis of diverse plant species, water features, artworks, and recreational amenities.
When It Started
The garden’s rich history dates back to 1863. An English oak tree was planted to celebrate the wedding of Prince Albert and Princess Alexandra of Denmark.
Since then, the gardens have undergone impressive expansion, extending over an impressive 75-acre land area, snuggled on three sides by the Avon River, creating an enchanting atmosphere for visitors.

Exploring the park
With Spring in full swing and the weather getting warmer by the day, I thought it would be the perfect time to take a break and head to the Botanical Garden of Waipapa over the weekend. Let me tell you, the collection of trees there is absolutely stunning!
I was completely awestruck by the unique and majestic trees in the gardens. It was a wonderful opportunity to explore and just relax in the many shady areas and lush green lawns.
Cuningham House exudes grandeur and is a prime example of architectural excellence. Its majestic structure showcases a meticulously maintained, diverse collection of tropical plants. The house holds a coveted spot on the Heritage New Zealand Pouhere Taonga list, a testament to its cultural significance and historical value. Unfortunately, it was closed today.
Other Activities
One of the must-visit attractions in the Christchurch Botanic Garden is the punt ride at the Avon River. It’s an opportunity to relax on a boat ride and see the city from a different perspective. You can sit back, relax, and glide through the river while admiring the picturesque Botanic Gardens. You can choose from two types of rides – float through the Botanical Garden of Waipapa starting from our Antigua Boat Sheds landing or see the central city’s Avon River Precinct from our Worcester Bridge landing. Please note that these rides are not free, but they are definitely worth the cost for the pleasant experience they offer.
Majestic Trees
The gardens’ collection of majestic and curious trees and plants was eye-opening. This place invites you to in-depth exploration and countless shady spots on well-trimmed lawns to relax and enjoy nature, like watching ducks swimming or admiring the famous Archery Lawn, framed by cork oak and giant sequoia trees.
Trees with trunks of twisting bark look like wood tornadoes halted in mid-rotation. Trees with naked, curled branches resting on the grass resemble elongated limbs, waiting to snatch you up as you pass by, like those in the scarier scenes of Sleepy Hollow movie.
The flowers
I am not an expert in flowers, but I know some popular ones, such as tulips, orchids, and carnations. I will use Google to help me identify them.
As you explore the Christchurch Botanic Garden, you will come across a wide variety of plants from six different continents.
You will be amazed by the stunning rhododendrons, hellebores, tulips, and lilies, which come in a mesmerizing array of colors and emit a delightful fragrance.
The garden has two rose gardens that are dedicated to showcasing the garden’s love for roses.
Established in 1909, the Central Rose Garden has 104 beds featuring climbing, standard, and Hybrid Tea modern roses in different hues.
The Heritage Rose Garden is another beautiful place that tells the stories of roses established before 1867, and each one has a unique history to share.
Both gardens are adorned with an impressive range of roses in delightful shades of pink, peach, red, and yellow, filling the air with their sweet scent. A visit to the Botanical Garden of Waipapa is an experience not to be missed!
