Did you know that female New Zealand fur seals are known to remain in the same colony their entire life? After giving birth in late November, they take a short vacation to the sea for a few days to grab a bite. Then, they return to the colony to spend seven lovely days nursing and playing with their pups. Isn’t that adorable?
This makes the breeding colony at Tauranga Bay, Cape Foulwind, an amazing spot to observe these charming creatures all year round.
Towards the end of November, male seals make their way to the breeding grounds to compete for mating. The most successful males can attract up to 16 female seals, but on average, they attract less than seven. During the breeding season, the males stay on land and don’t eat for up to two months. By mid-January, most of them return to the sea. It’s fascinating to learn about these amazing creatures!
Not far from the parking area is a winding flat and undulating self-guided coastal track of a 1.5-hour walk one way. It reveals a panoramic view of the mountain, rugged coastline, a lighthouse, and elevated viewing platforms to observe fur seals in their natural habitat. The best times to see seals are from November to February.
