The Grove Scenic Reserve was a breathtaking revelation. It feels like a magical realm where the shapes and faces carved into the ancient rock remind us of a lost civilization, beautifully preserved in time—a testament to nature’s artistry.
These rocks are over 400 million years old, giving the sensation of stepping back in time or walking into a scene from Jurassic Park, where at any moment, a velociraptor could appear from behind the vegetation.

So, where is exactly this Grove and what to expect?
The Grove Scenic Reserve is located in Golden Bay, in the southwest region of the South Island of New Zealand, near the town of Takaka. It is just a short drive from Takaka and can be accessed via Abel Tasman Drive and Clifton Road.
You’ll find a convenient car park right at the beginning of the walking trail!
The reserve has a lovely loop track that meanders through stunning limestone formations, beautiful nikau palms, and majestic northern rata trees, all leading to a fantastic viewpoint overlooking Golden Bay.
This walking track is super easy and perfect for everyone, regardless of age or ability. It’s a favorite spot for a quick stroll, as the loop is under a kilometer long and only takes about 20 minutes to walk. The path is mostly flat, with just a staircase or two. So, take your time to soak in all the gorgeous scenery—you won’t want to rush!
The adventure at the Grove
Limestone Formation
As we strolled along, we couldn’t help but admire the breathtaking landscape of the reserve, famous for its unique limestone formations. We happily explored impressive limestone rocks, some of which were shaped by the water, and discovered the beautiful roots of northern rātā trees weaving through them.
We found ourselves standing beneath gigantic boulders and made our way through a narrow chasm filled with the twisting roots of these trees.
The path took us right through this chasm, surrounded by the soaring limestone cliffs, and eventually led us to a scenic lookout point that took our breath away!
The Panoramic View
As we hiked along, we stumbled upon a set of stairs that led us to an incredible lookout point. The views of Golden Bay were simply breathtaking!
The sparkling waters and the lush hills around us showcased the area’s beauty perfectly. I a fantastic spot to pause and soak it all in. From our perch, we had jaw-dropping panoramas of Golden Bay, Pohara Beach, and some adorable farmland. It looked like it stepped out of a postcard.
In the distance, we spotted a hawk gliding through the sky. It was probably looking for lunch, when suddenly two alarmed ducks started quacking like they were auditioning for a role in a horror movie. Talk about drama! It really added a hilarious twist to our adventure in this stunning landscape.
Wildlife
The reserve is a wonderful sanctuary filled with an impressive variety of native plants and animals. It maks it an essential place for nature conservation.
One of its most charming features is the graceful nikau palms, which dance gently in the coastal breeze, their feathery fronds adding a tropical vibe to the scenery.
You’ll also find a vibrant collection of ferns here. You can see different shapes, sizes, and shades of green that flourish in the cool, shaded underbrush.
If you’re a bird lover, you’re in for a treat!
The reserve is home to a fantastic range of bird species. It includs the lovely tui, famous for its beautiful white throat tuft and melodious song, as well as the stunning kererū, or New Zealand pigeon, known for its impressive size and shimmering feathers.
All of these outstanding elements come together to create a lively habitat that truly highlights the unique beauty and ecological importance of this special reserve.
Biodiversity
In New Zealand, scenic reserves are a wonderful type of protected area that can be found all over the country. They are the most common form of protected land. Their sizes vary a lot—most are under 100 hectares, but some are bigger than 1,000 hectares!
These reserves are home to incredible biodiversity, which makes it essential to protect these natural spaces. By doing so, we ensure that future generations can explore and appreciate the beauty of nature just as we do today.
