Kuirau Park in Rotorua is a serene and pleasant park that is a must-visit destination for both locals and tourists.

Rotorua has several parks where you can see geysers, boiling mud ponds, and hot lakes that are genuinely stunning. However, Kuirao Park is the best spot to begin your adventure and explore this fantastic, turbulent world of hot water.
After visiting Kuirao Park, you should head to Whakarewarewa – The Living Maori Village, Waimangu Volcanic Valley, and Wai-O-Tapu Thermal Wonderland.

The Legend of Kuirau Park and the Taniwha

Kuirau has a fascinating Maori legend about a mythological creature called Taniwha, which looks like a monster and lives in water.
According to the legend, the park’s boiling lake was once much cooler and was called “Taokahu.” Tamahika was the first to set up a home at the spot. One day, his wife, Kuirau, was bathing in the lake when a Taniwha grabbed her and pulled her down into his watery lair beneath the lake.
The gods saw Kuirau struggling with the Taniwha and became angry with the monster’s audacity. They used their powers to boil the lake and destroy the Taniwha. Unfortunately, Tamahika’s wife died in the process. As a result, the lake and the park surrounding it have been named after Kuirau to honor her memory.
