If you thought the ocean views near Fitzroy Island were a vibe, wait until you head up into the mountains. Today, we are swapping the deep blue for deep jungle green and exploring the fairy-tale mountain village of Kuranda, tucked deep inside the ancient Wet Tropics of Queensland.
While many visitors head up here to ride the famous scenic train or the high-flying gondola, I skipped the transit hype entirely and went straight for the real action. I spent my day completely immersed in the village’s vibrant markets, strange roadside sights, and world-class wildlife sanctuaries.
Here is the hilarious, colorful, and slightly chaotic truth about my day chasing beats—and bright feathers—in Kuranda!
🛩️First Stop: An Unexpected Plane Wreck🛩️
As we made our way toward the markets in the direction of Birdworld, we stumbled across something you definitely don’t see every day tucked into a tropical rainforest village: a completely abandoned Douglas DC-3 aircraft.
Affectionately named “Miss Fortune,” this vintage plane looks like it straight-up crash-landed right out of an Indiana Jones flick. It is covered in greenery, full of character, and makes for an epic, unexpected photo op before you even set foot into the actual attractions. Talk about an awesome welcome mat!
🦜Birdworld Kuranda: An Oasis of Personalities🦜
Right past the plane, we stepped into Birdworld Kuranda. Wow. This place is an absolute oasis of incredible birds of every imaginable color, shape, and form. As a photography lover, I was in absolute heaven with my Olympus camera—though I quickly realized these birds don’t just sit there looking pretty; they have massive personalities.
Here are a few of the unforgettable characters I met:

- The Hustlers: A flock of Red-Tailed Black Cockatoos was actively trailing after tourists, entirely unbothered by personal space, doing everything short of flashing a tiny tin cup for food.
- The Playdate: I spotted a stunningly bright Galah having the absolute time of its life, happily crunching on a special treat gently offered by a little girl.
- The Prehistoric Pacer: The famous endangered Southern Cassowary paced back and forth inside his enclosure, completely locked in thought, looking like a 2-meter-tall prehistoric philosopher pondering something deeply important.
- The Witch: The Glossy Ibis was a total mood. With its long, iridescent purple feathers and uniquely curved, witchy face, it looked like it was about to offer me a cursed apple.
- The “Soggy” Friend: I locked eyes with a White-Faced Heron that possessed some truly bizarre feathers. No matter how dry it was, it looked permanently, hilariously wet.
- The Stalker: A Bush Stone-Curlew stood perfectly still, smiling right at me with a look of pure, wide-eyed curiosity. I couldn’t tell if it wanted to be my friend or steal my soul.
- The First-Timer: I also got a close look at a Diamond Dove, a bird I had never even heard of before. It had the softest, most delicate grey-blue plumage contrasted against a striking, bright red eye-ring. Beautiful!
- The Royalty: Swapping the Australian natives for a bit of international flair, the aviary also featured gorgeous, pastel-pink cockatoos and brilliant, giant Scarlet Macaws preening their red, yellow, and blue feathers in the trees.
🦋The Butterfly Sanctuary🦋
Next, we headed into the Australian Butterfly Sanctuary. I can honestly say I have never seen so many butterflies gathered together in one single place in my entire life. It was a literal blizzard of color, packed with over 1,500 tropical beauties.
I got to see a stunning lineup of local residents up close:
- The Bright Red Showstoppers: Gorgeous Red Lacewings flashing their intensely bright red wings.
- The Playful Pair: A pair of lovely Blue Moon Butterflies dancing and playing together through the air.
- The Electric Blues: Radiant Blue-Banded Eggflies showing off their beautiful, glowing blue bands.
- The Giants: Massive Cairns Birdwings. This is officially the biggest butterfly I have ever seen alive in my entire life!
- The Camouflage Artists: Unique Great Eggflies, which blend into the foliage with their deep, rich brown colors.
- The Designers: Elegant Orchard Swallowtails. The intricate, beautiful design of their trailing tails easily makes them one of the most gorgeous butterflies in the entire aviary.
Friendly encounters at the Sanctuaries
My backpack is this bright yellow beacon, and let me tell you, visiting the bird sanctuary and butterfly sanctuary was a total blast! The flashy color had the birds and butterflies totally vibing with me. Seriously, they were like, “Ooh, what’s this?”
In the aviary, the giant green-and-yellow Cairns Birdwings claimed my bag as their new hangout spot, and I swear it was like a bird club meeting on my backpack. Between the two sanctuaries, I had a rotating cast of feathered friends and a swarm of butterflies treating my backpack like their very own lounge chair.
Instead of just snapping pics of the wildlife, I basically became their favorite piece of furniture! If you’re looking for a way to connect with nature, I highly recommend rocking a yellow backpack. Trust me, it’s a surefire way to become the wildlife’s VIP lounge—10/10 would recommend!
🎨Strolling the Hippie Markets
& Immersing in Aboriginal Art🎨
After our wildlife modeling gigs, we spent some time strolling through the heritage market. The place has an incredible, laid-back hippie vibe that makes you want to instantly slow down and just soak in the atmosphere.
Tucked away among the stalls, I stumbled upon a fantastic art studio showcasing incredible, authentic Aboriginal art. The creativity dripping out of this place was unreal. The detailed dot work, vibrant storytelling canvas styles, and deep cultural connection completely captivated me. It perfectly captured the spiritual, timeless energy of the ancient rainforest surrounding Kuranda. It was the perfect creative beat to wrap up an unforgettable mountain day. Unfortunately, I was unable to take pictures.
🪄The Verdict: Pure Village Magic🪄
Spending the whole day soaking in the heart of the village, exploring the sanctuaries, and wandering through the markets turned out to be our best decision. Seriously, Kuranda is like a rainbow exploded! It’s colorful, vibrant, and buzzing with life, all set to its own quirky tropical beat.
