Opononi Sand Dunes

The Opononi Sand Dunes is a must-visit spot on the northern side of the Hokianga Harbor. Enjoy it with your friends or family and have a fantastic time.

These sand dunes are massive and one of the most popular things to do in Hokianga. There are other sand dunes in this part of the country, too, but the Opononi Sand Dunes are something else.

How To Get There

Boarding on Hokianga Express.

You can get there in two ways: by boat from the other side of the Hokianga Harbour (the more popular option for tourists) or by road.

We decided to take the boat and had a blast with the friendly boat driver from Hokianga Express Charters. He gave us all the necessary information and even lent us a boogie board for free. With the boogie board in hand, we were ready to conquer the dunes.

The Journey

They lent us a boogie board for free.

A long walk to the top of the dune.

Upon arrival, we embarked on a thrilling adventure exploring the sand dunes. The walk was a bit lengthy, but the journey was worth it. The rain made walking easier and provided better traction.

We took shelter behind the giant dunes to avoid the strong winds.

We sat at the top of the massive dune for lunch, prepared in advance. It’s important to keep in mind that there are no food or drink options nearby, so packing your own is a must. We took shelter behind the giant dunes to avoid the strong winds and sand blowing everywhere. Eating sand is definitely not a pleasant experience!

It may seem that the odd shapes are made of stone, but in reality, they are entirely composed of sand.

We were mesmerized by the impressive sand sculptures and gigantic sand canyons. The strong wind only added to the excitement, but it didn’t stop us from having a good time.

We took countless pictures and created unforgettable memories before heading back to have even more fun.

On the top of the dune, the view was magnificent but super windy.
Going back.

The Fun

Despite the unfavorable weather, we still had a ball exploring the remarkable Opononi Sand Dunes. A sunny and warm day would have made it even better, but even with rain, we still managed to have some fun!

What Is The History Of The Sand Dunes In Opononi?

Legend has it that Kupe, the first Māori explorer, was the first to set foot on these sandy dunes. He is said to have landed here before returning to Hawaiki, which is why the harbor is called Te Hokianga-nui-a-Kupe, meaning the place of Kupe’s great return. The dunes have since become an important historical landmark, attracting visitors from all over the world who come to experience the rich cultural heritage of the Māori.

The twin settlements of Ōpononi and Omapere are located on the west coast of New Zealand’s North Island, surrounded by stunning natural beauty. They are known for their friendly and welcoming locals, who are always happy to share their knowledge of the area’s history and culture.

Here Lies “Opo,” the friendly dolphin 1955-1956

One of the most famous stories associated with these settlements is the tale of Opo, the friendly dolphin who used to swim in the waters around Ōpononi. In the mid-1950s, Opo became a beloved member of the community, allowing children to ride on its back and play with swimmers in the harbor. Opo’s legacy lives on to this day, and the settlements of Ōpononi and Omapere continue to be treasured destinations for travelers seeking a unique and authentic New Zealand experience.
