Te Paki Sand Dunes is an incredible place to visit after spending some time at Ninety Mile Beach. At the northern end, near the Te Paki Stream, you’ll find some seriously fun dunes that are steep and thrilling!

Even if you’re not interested in surfing the dunes, it’s still worth a visit. But if you are, don’t worry – you can easily rent a board for $15 at the base of the dunes or $10 up the road.

Te Paki is such a stunning coastal strip that’s 10km long and 1km wide. The Te Paki Giant Dunes are a whopping 150m (492 ft) high! It’s hard not to be impressed by such a magnificent sight.

On our way to Cape Reinga, we decided to detour and check it out quickly. And boy, were we glad we did! The views were simply breathtaking.

You’ll find a car park with a stunning view when you get to the end of the road. From there, you can follow a trail down to the dunes. Climbing up the dunes may be challenging, but I’m sure the view from the top is absolutely worth it.
We were so excited by the sounds of people screaming and laughing as they surfed the dunes that we wanted to try it out, too! Unfortunately, we had to head to Cape Reinga to catch the sunset, so we decided to leave it for another day.

The landscape around Te Paki is simply stunning. When you’re there, you’ll feel like you are in a different world, like a desert in the middle of nowhere. It’s incredible to imagine that such a beautiful place is just a short distance from Northland’s sheep pasture land. So, why wait? Head over to Te Paki’s dunes and have an incredible time! We promise you won’t regret it!
