What is the legend of Mount Maunganui?
Legend has it that Mauao Mountain didn’t have a name and was secretly fond of another mountain, Pūwhenua. Mauao deeply loved Pūwhenua, but unfortunately, Pūwhenua did not love him back, leaving him sad and depressed.

One night, filled with sadness and heartache, Mauao sought help from the forest fairy-like creatures. Mauao asked them to take him to the ocean to end his suffering. The creatures listened to Mauao’s plea and carried him to the ocean, where he stood for a long time, gazing out to sea.
As the sun started to rise, its light illuminated Mauao by the sun’s rays. This event was a sign from the gods that Mauao should remain where he was and protect the land and sea. So, Mauao Mountain got its name: “caught in the light of the day.”

Today, Mauao Mountain is a popular tourist attraction. Locals and visitors alike hike its trails, take in the stunning views of the Bay of Plenty, and learn about the stories of Mauao and Pūwhenua.
