What is the story behind Pancake Rocks?
The Pancake Rocks are incredible limestone formations that were created millions of years ago. They are the result of marine creatures’ remains settling on the sea bed, which were then lifted by earthquakes. These rocks are called “pancakes” because they resemble giant layers of pancakes.
Each pancake is made of a layer of limestone that consists of tiny shell fragments separated from each other by a thin layer of siltstone. The softer siltstone has been eroded over time by rain, wind, and sea spray, creating the unique appearance of the limestone layers.
Additionally, Dolomite Point has a complex system of underground passageways and large open caverns that face the sea. When the ocean swells, water is forced into these passages, and at high tide, large geysers of spray burst into the air, creating a breathtaking sight.
