Road Trip Surprise: Kaniva’s Whimsical Sheep Art Trail

The stunning Silo Art.

If you’re driving the Western Highway between Adelaide and Melbourne, you are likely mapping out all the iconic spots along the route.

While the towering silo murals are a massive drawcard for country road trips, sometimes the best part of the journey happens when you least expect it.

That was exactly our experience when we pulled into the charming town of Kaniva for a quick bite to eat. We mapped out a stop to see the stunning 29.6-meter-high Silo Art painted by artist David Lee Pereira in 2020. The striking mural perfectly captures the vibrant flora and fauna of the nearby Little Desert National Park.

But after stretching our legs and grabbing some food, we took a stroll through the town and stumbled upon the most wonderful surprise: Kaniva’s Sheep Art Trail.

What is the Sheep Art Trail?

Tucked away in the heart of the Wimmera Mallee region, this 900-meter-long trail is a fabulous community arts project. It features dozens of life-sized, brightly painted sheep, lambs, and even a couple of sheepdogs.

The sheep are spread around the town.

The trail runs from the iconic Big Windmill in town, past the main street, and connects directly to the Wetlands and Fauna Park.

What makes it so special is that it is completely run by the community. Local artists and community groups have painted each sheep to tell its own unique story, linking them to local places, history, and organizations.

As you walk along, you’ll notice that almost every shop and garden in the town center displays one of these woolly wonders for protection!

Fun Things to See and Do on the Trail:

Play a game of “Spot the Windmill”: Every single painted sheep has a tiny windmill hidden somewhere on its design.

Each sheep wears an ear tag with a QR code.

Learn the history: Each sheep wears an ear tag with a QR code. When scanned with your phone, it tells you the story of that specific sheep and the local group it represents.

Explore interactive apps: If you want to make it a family activity, try the Actionbound App for a self-guided tour of the trail.

Why You Should Stop in Kaniva

Kaniva serves as a perfect midway sanctuary and welcomes visitors as the western gateway to the Victorian Silo Art Trail. It’s far more than just a place to fuel up your car.

The town has plenty of history, which is proudly displayed right on the streets. As you walk through the downtown area, you will notice historical signs on the buildings that detail which stores used to be there and share their unique histories.

Combined with spotlessly clean parks, a surprisingly quirky Puppet Shop, and genuine country hospitality at the local cafes and pubs, it deserves a dedicated hour of your road trip.

Don’t Miss Kaniva!

Big impact often comes in small packages, and Kaniva is proof of that. While the massive silo art might get you to turn off the highway, it’s the charming community spirit of the Sheep Art Trail that will make you want to stay. It turned our quick meal stop into an unforgettable highlight of our Melbourne-to-Adelaide road trip.

Make sure to add it to your itinerary—you won’t regret it!🐑
