In Ōamaru, the annual Steampunk Festival has truly established itself as a standout event on the cultural calendar, attracting thousands of New Zealanders and international visitors.
This vibrant celebration skillfully blends fashion, fantasy, and futurism, creating a unique experience for all attendees. Importantly, the festival plays a vital role in boosting the local economy by drawing in tourists from around the globe to participate in and enjoy the lively atmosphere.
This marks my fourth year attending the festival, and I’ve observed some exciting developments. The 2022 festival was a milestone as it marked the grand reopening following the global pandemic. Since then, I’ve noticed increased participation, especially among younger attendees. I was impressed by the innovative costumes, machinery, and accessories this year, showcasing remarkable creativity.
The event attracts a diverse audience and highlights the importance of engaging a new generation, which is essential for its continued growth and evolution. Seeing how fresh perspectives contribute to the festival’s future is encouraging!
So What is Steampunk?🤔
Steampunk explores early science fiction’s imaginative and extraordinary aspects, focusing on themes of adventure, innovation, and the fantastical possibilities of technology and time manipulation. This genre draws inspiration from the science fiction and literature of the Victorian era, particularly works such as H.G. Wells’ “The Time Machine,” which played a crucial role in popularizing the concept of time travel. While time travel is not a central theme in every steampunk narrative, it is a significant and often-used element, especially in the genre’s formative years.

This year, the festival theme is “Circus in Time,” an exciting blend that combines the vibrant flamboyance and mesmerizing spectacle of the circus with adventurous journeys through time.
Attendees can look forward to a dynamic array of performances, costumes, and activities that transport them to different eras while capturing a circus’s whimsical charm and wonder. This theme invites participants to explore how the enchantment of the circus intertwines with the mysteries of time, creating a captivating experience filled with imagination and creativity.
Why Oamaru is a perfect place for Steampunk Festival?
Steampunk is a subgenre that often draws inspiration from the Victorian era’s distinctive fashion, groundbreaking technology, and rich culture. From the 1830s to the early 1900s, this period was marked by the rise of revolutionary steam-powered machinery, including steam engines and locomotives, which became symbols of industrial progress and innovation. These technological marvels significantly influenced Steampunk’s aesthetics and imaginative elements, characterized by a blend of retro-futurism and Victorian elegance.
As a result, the Victorian precinct of Ōamaru, with its well-preserved architecture and historical ambiance, serves as an ideal backdrop for Steampunk festivities.
The Victorians had a deep appreciation for the circus, which was a widely popular form of entertainment during their time. Circus performances and sideshows captivated audiences with their thrilling acts, eccentric performers, and colorful spectacles, making them an integral part of Victorian leisure culture.
Events in Ōamaru effectively celebrate this lively spirit, showcasing the blend of history, creativity, and community that defines Steampunk and Victorian entertainment.
How long is the festival?
The five-day festival kicked off earlier this week, preceding the King’s Birthday weekend, until Monday evening. This annual event has drawn a large crowd, and I can confidently say that Ōamaru was fully booked; all the cafes were bustling with eager visitors, and the motels were at capacity. If you’re considering attending next year, I highly recommend reserving your accommodation as early as possible to avoid missing out.
The majority of tourists come from outside Waitaki, and many choose to stay for at least three nights to fully experience everything the festival has to offer.Ōamaruu is rich in attractions, from its historic architecture to its stunning coastal scenery and vibrant local culture, ensuring that there’s plenty to see and do during your visit!
