I absolutely love the West Coast of the South Island of New Zealand! It feels like I’ve been transported to another world. The sunsets are breathtaking, and the vegetation looks like something from a prehistoric paradise. I sometimes catch myself wondering if a dinosaur will come strolling out of it! It’s just so incredibly beautiful.

What adds to the allure of the West is its isolation. The road network is sparse, with only one State Highway 6 connecting the northern town of Karamea to the southern town of Jackson Bay. These towns, the last stop on the highway at each end, are like hidden gems waiting to be discovered.
Jackson Bay, or Okahu, is a charming fishing town with a harbor that has been around since the early pioneer days of seal hunting. Beyond this point, the steep mountain ranges plunge directly into the sea – the first of the deep glacial fjords is just 60 km (37 miles) away.

We stumbled upon a sign for a historic cemetery from Jackson Bay, and it felt like the perfect invitation to stop and do some exploring!
Pioneer Cemetery, nestled in the bush, is a tribute to the strength and bravery of the early European settlers who made Jackson Bay their home in 1875. Despite being almost hidden in the wilderness, dedicated locals have ensured it remains untouched by nature. It’s a place that deserves our respect and thoughtful consideration.
Jackson Bay is a picturesque town steeped in history and surrounded by natural beauty. I hope the video captures its charm and that you enjoy it.
