Exploring Wairere Falls: A Must-Visit Destination in Matamata

While we were in Matamata, we stumbled upon this amazing waterfall hidden in a vibrant forest with tall trees and all kinds of plants. We could hear birds singing, and the air smelled fresh and nice. Being surrounded by those relaxing sounds of nature made the whole experience feel magical.

The Wairere Falls Track has been closed since July 13, 2025, because of a rockfall and the risk of more land movement. While you can’t hike all the way up to the waterfall, you can still explore the lower trail leading to “The International Seat of Peace.” It’s a gorgeous spot with stunning views, perfect for chilling out and taking in the scenery.

It’s a fantastic place to relax, reflect, and enjoy nature’s beauty.

The Hike

Just a quick 10-minute drive from Matamata brings you to Wairere Falls, the tallest waterfall in the North Island, dropping a massive 153 meters down a rocky cliff. It’s a seriously cool spot and part of a popular walking track in the beautiful Waikato area.

The hike is an exciting adventure that usually takes about 3 to 4 hours round-trip. As you walk along the trail, you’ll see some amazing landscapes that change along the way. The path is well-kept and winds through lush forests, where tall trees create a nice, cool canopy above. Mossy rocks line the trail, adding to the magical vibe, and you’ll hear small streams bubbling nearby, making the sounds of nature even more inviting.

Stunning views of the dairy farms in the Waikato plains.

Even though we only explored the lower part of the trail, it was super rewarding. The lower viewing platform gives you stunning views of a 1,000-acre dairy farm, the beautiful Waikato plains, and the scenic valley. The forest is a vibrant splash of green, and while we strolled, we listened to the cheerful chirping of birds, as if they were greeting us in their peaceful home. Every moment spent in this beautiful spot reminded us of how amazing the outdoors can be.

The International Seat of Peace

The “International Seat of Peace” is a cool wooden bench on a hill where you can catch an awesome view of Wairere Falls. Simon Bourke, a local farmer, thought up this chill spot for folks to take a break and clear their heads. The name comes from the beautiful and peaceful sights all around it, making it a great hangout for anyone wanting to enjoy nature. After tackling that hiking trail, sinking into that bench feels amazing!

As more people learned about this relaxing spot, it became a gathering place where everyone could come together to pause, reflect, and find some peace in the great outdoors. Today, the “International Seat of Peace” is not just about personal relaxation; it’s also a shared getaway for anyone looking to take a breather from the hustle and bustle of everyday life.

Visitor tips

Safety

Some parts of the trail can get pretty wet, muddy, and rocky, so it’s a good idea to wear sturdy shoes with good grip or tramping boots. Just be careful when you’re walking over the rocky and slippery spots!

Also, keep in mind that there’s a higher chance of landslides, rockfalls, and flash flooding if it’s been pouring rain. It’s best to steer clear of the trail during heavy rain or whenever there’s a severe weather warning in effect.

Best Time to Visit and Parking

Try to go early in the morning or on weekdays to steer clear of the crowds. Just a heads up, don’t leave your valuables in the car because there have been some thefts in the parking lot.
