Unveiling the 2026 Summer Harvest Festival in Hobbiton: Food, Fun, and Fellowship

The Summer Harvest Festival Hobbiton is always a lively and fun event at the Green Dragon Marketplace. It’s packed with traditional Hobbit food, live music, and interactive games. We’ve been going to this festival for the last three years, and we really love it.

The festival features a cool evening walk through the village, detailed looks at the buffet, tips on what to wear for the prize-giving, and tons of music and dancing! This year was no exception—the festival was just as vibrant as always.

The weather wasn’t the best, though; there was some rain, a little sunshine, and by evening, the wind and chill made things a bit uncomfortable for some folks. But overall, it was a great time at the 2026 Hobbiton festival!

🚶‍♀️The Evening Walk Through the Village

The Hobbiton village walk lets you dive into an enchanting 12-acre movie set at the Alexander Farm. You’ll find 44 beautifully crafted Hobbit holes, including the famous Bag End, where Bilbo and Frodo live. As you wander around this charming village, you’ll notice all sorts of amazing details that bring “The Hobbit” to life, from lush gardens to quirky buildings.

Some of the tour highlights include checking out the cozy interior of Bagshot Row™, where you can see how Hobbits live, and hanging out at the Green Dragon™ Inn, perfect for kicking back with a drink. Don’t miss the impressive artificial oak tree above Bag End, with its branches featuring 200,000 hand-painted leaves—it’s a stunning sight that captures the natural beauty of Middle-earth.

Every step through Hobbiton feels like stepping into a world of wonder and imagination.

🏡Bagshot Row™ Interior

The Hobbit hole is a must-see at Hobbiton! Guests can now check out a fully detailed and furnished Hobbit hole, really getting a taste of Hobbit life. It’s a fun experience where you can wander through cozy hallways and inviting rooms, all designed by the original film crew.

This Hobbit home opened to the public in December 2023. Its interiors capture the whimsical, rustic vibe of a typical Hobbit’s living space. The design team, featuring talented artists like Brian Massey, Ra Vincent, and John Howe, made sure to focus on every little detail, so it feels just right—as if a Hobbit had just stepped out to take care of their daily chores.

The project involved digging into the hillside behind the buildings on Bagshot Row to create two awesome underground spaces that really capture the feel of the Shire. With handmade furniture, cool decorations, and cozy lighting, these areas invite guests to dive into the magical world of Hobbits.

You definitely won’t forget this experience!

🌳The Bag End Oak Tree

The artificial oak stands tall.

Hobbiton was built on an actual farm and has real plants and animals. But there’s one standout feature: the artificial oak tree right at the center. This amazing tree, perched above Bag End at the Hobbiton Movie Set. It weighs a hefty 26 tons and is made from steel and fiberglass. It was specially designed for The Hobbit trilogy and took a lot of careful work to get it just right. The tree has over 200,000 plastic leaves, which were originally made from silk. Each leaf is hand-painted to get that perfect “Shire-green” color, capturing the lush and vibrant feel of the Shire.

This artificial tree was created because the original from “The Lord of the Rings” had died. They needed a smaller, younger-looking tree to match the look of the prequel series. While the rest of Hobbiton is filled with real plants and gardens cared for by a dedicated team, this tree is unique as it’s the only one in the Shire that stays green all the time, adding to the whimsical and timeless charm of the place.

🎪The Festival

After the tour, you are welcomed by Gandalf and music.

The festival is all about having a great time!

It’s lively and filled with live music, plus you’ll see wandering performers throughout the Green Dragon Marketplace. You can jump in on some fun activities like a wheelbarrow race, cornhole, and other Shire-themed games in the Party Marquee.

The tents at the market are nicely decorated.

In the evening, you can keep your cup full of Hobbit™ Southfarthing™ selection, which includes a couple of traditional ales, an apple cider, and a non-alcoholic ginger beer—all handcrafted and unique to the Hobbiton Movie Set. They also have some special ales just for this event. If ales aren’t your thing, no worries—you can grab some cider, wines, or other non-alcoholic drinks.

The festival was vibrant.

While enjoying your drink, check out the Party Marquee, where you can munch on finger foods like cheese and bread, smoked fish, and cold cuts. There are also some tempting desserts to check out. Then, get ready for a buffet dinner before the real fun starts! Sit at the long banquet tables and dig into a spread of traditional Hobbit fare. It includes salads, roast potatoes, veggies, roast chicken thighs, and pork.

Honestly, the food wasn’t that impressive this year. The chicken and green beans were tasty, but everything else was just okay. I didn’t try the desserts, but they looked alright. Still, after a couple of drinks, you probably won’t even care about the food!

Is it worth going to the Summer Harvest Hobbiton Festival?

The Summer Harvest Festival at Hobbiton is definitely worth it, offering a way cooler, more magical experience than the regular tours, even if it is a bit pricier. It usually happens in February, making the summer vibe even more enjoyable. But this year was a letdown. Unlike the last two years, when the weather was fantastic.

This year we got stuck with rain, wind, and really chilly night. Overall, summer in New Zealand has been a bit of a disappointment, as it seems the warm weather just didn’t want to stick around.

The festival lasts 4 hours and includes a tour of the set, live music, themed games, unlimited drinks, and a buffet dinner under a marquee.

If you haven’t been to a festival in Hobbiton, you should definitely check out the Summer Harvest one. I’ve gone for the past three years, and this last one didn’t do much for me. The weather really didn’t help, plus the food options just weren’t that great.

That said, it’s still a must for true fans!
