What I Love About Christchurch

Christchurch holds a special place in my heart.

My time in Christchurch has been extraordinary during the last two and a half years. Traveling extensively over the past fifty years and living in various countries has given me unique experiences. Still, New Zealand holds a truly special place in my heart.

Adjusting to life in Christchurch was a smooth transition for me since the city has a unique atmosphere compared to others. Although it was a significant change initially, I gradually found value in life’s simpler aspects. While some may perceive Christchurch as having a slow pace or being dull, I personally believe that life is what you make of it!

What I love about this city

The People

One aspect of Christchurch that I truly cherish is the people.

While some may find it challenging to make friends here in Christchurch, I’ve been fortunate to meet and develop meaningful friendships that I will cherish. It’s been an enriching experience. For someone like me who moves constantly and has to connect with new people, it’s important to actively seek ways to engage with the local community, as we are social individuals.

Joining a photography group has been a fantastic opportunity to explore and learn from the locals, allowing me to uncover the beauty of the country, its culinary delights, traditions, and language. I also enrolled in adult classes and discovered and developed new skills and talents.

The Weather

The Botanic Gardens

Christchurch experiences distinct seasons, each with its own unique charm. Winter is cold and clear, with the smell of wood smoke in the air, reminiscent of a distant rural setting, yet we are in the city. New blossoms and greenery bring a sense of renewal in spring, with gorgeous trees adorning the city.

Summers are hot and dry with refreshing sea breezes, while crunchy leaves and beautiful, colorful trees mark autumn. Each season has its distinctive charm, and the humidity is rarely an issue. Sometimes, all four seasons can be experienced in a single day.

The Scars

Christchurch scars still exist.

Christchurch experienced devastating earthquakes on 22 February 2011 and September of the same year. Many buildings, particularly heritage structures like the Anglican Christchurch Cathedral, were severely damaged or destroyed.

The city still bears the scars of the disaster, with broken buildings creating a sense of emptiness and loss. However, despite the destruction, the people of Canterbury remained resilient and gradually rebuilt the city into a beautiful and transformed place. Today, Christchurch boasts vibrant street art and new modern buildings that complement the altered landscape.

Christchurch has undergone a metamorphosis like a butterfly emerging from a chrysalis, giving rise to a new and rejuvenated city.

The History

I am captivated by the enthralling history of Christchurch and New Zealand as a whole. Despite only being around 150 years old, New Zealand boasts many historical treasures, providing valuable insights into its diverse and vibrant past.

As I journeyed through New Zealand, I was able to gain a deeper understanding of the history and appreciate the resilience and determination of the early settlers. From the colonial era to the Indigenous Maori heritage, countless stories and artifacts await exploration and celebration.

The other side of the coin

Every city always has areas for improvement; no city is perfect. Christchurch has beautiful beaches, but the water is usually cold and windy, with temperatures rarely exceeding 17 degrees Celsius (62°F).

Public transportation within the city is reliable, but having a car might be necessary if you live on the outskirts. The traffic congestion tends to increase after 1 pm, so I wouldn’t say I like driving in the city in the afternoon.

There is a need for more diverse shopping options in the city, particularly for groceries, as the current selection is quite standard and the prices tend to be high. Fashion is another issue, but having too many choices can become a problem when deciding what to buy. I guess that helps to narrow down when you have just a few options.

The food scene in Christchurch is dominated by fast-food establishments, which may not be to everyone’s liking. While some people appreciate the convenience of grab-and-go options, finding tasty and healthy food options for those who don’t particularly enjoy fast food can be challenging.

Overall, Christchurch is…

Talented street art.

This city is truly special. It’s a small city where everything is within a 20-minute drive or less. It’s perfect for outdoor activities like running, biking, skiing, and camping and offers endless opportunities for photography. There are also museums to visit. The lifestyle is top-notch, but it’s not the place for avid club-goers.

The best way to appreciate its greatness is to come and experience it for yourself.
