Avarua

Where and When is the Market Open?

Nestled along the picturesque waterfront beside Avarua, located in the northern part of the island, Avarua serves as the capital and is the administrative, economic, and commercial center of the country.

The Punanga Nui Market is a vital destination for both locals and visitors. The market buzzes with energy, especially on Saturday mornings from 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., when it is at its busiest.

📜Some History

The market first opened its doors back in 1992, and Prince Edward was there to celebrate the grand opening! We established it to provide local farmers, fishers, and food producers with a great platform. This was to support their indigenous businesses after the demolition of the previous market for development in Avarua.

The name “Punanga Nui” was chosen through a fun competition won by a cultural teacher from Tereora College.

Since then, the market has really taken off! It began with just fresh produce but quickly expanded to encompass a wide range of trade and marketing areas. Nowadays, it’s a beloved community gathering spot and a vibrant cultural hub. Visitors can find a wide range of authentic Cook Islands art, crafts, and souvenirs, including beautiful black pearls, vibrant pareus, and cozy tivaivai (quilts).

Our Recommendation🐟

The chef will grill your fish to the perfection!

If you’re a fan of fish, you’ve got to give Maroro a try! My husband always looks forward to the Saturday breakfast at the Maroro Tunutunu stall.

Mororo with Cassava and rice.

This delightful dish, also known as flying fish, is a local favorite and perfect for anyone visiting. It’s often paired with cassava and a splash of coconut cream, just like the tasty rukau. You can usually find it grilled to perfection, making it extra delicious!

Maroro is a popular choice for a weekend breakfast, so if you want to snag a plate, it’s a good idea to get there early, around 6:00 AM. Be on the lookout for the stalls serving up Maroro Tunutunu (BBQ flying fish) for a truly authentic and yummy experience!
